- 8:00-8:25 Check-in and Continental Breakfast
- Pick up your name badge and New Faculty Information Packet; then
relax and enjoy a continental breakfast and an informative slide show
about your new academic home.
- 8:25-8:45 Welcome and Introductions
- After brief welcoming remarks, you’ll participate in a “classroom
clickers” demonstration designed to help you learn something
about your new campus and colleagues.
- 8:45-9:05 President and Provost Welcome
- President Al Bowman and Provost Sheri Everts will officially welcome
you to our campus and community.
- 9:05-9:25 Plenary Session: Educating Illinois
- Associate Provost Jan Murphy will provide an overview of Illinois
State University’s mission and values.
- 9:25-9:45 Plenary Session: General Education
- Mardell Wilson, Director of the University Assessment Office, will
discuss issues related to General Education, the foundation upon which
the rest of a student’s education at Illinois State University
is built.
- 9:45-10:00 Transition
- Take a break and move to a new space for the first of three breakout
sessions. Be sure to arrive at your session site by 10:00! Need directions?

- Take a break and move back to the Old Main room for two informative
plenary sessions. Be sure to arrive at your session site by 11:00!

- 11:00-11:30 Plenary Session: These Are Our Students
- One of the keys to successful teaching is tailoring instruction to
the students we have—not the students we used to have, or the
students we wish we had. ISU has great students. Come learn more about
them from Associate Provost Jan Murphy.
- 11:30-11:50 Plenary Session: FERPA, the Helicopter Parent, and You
- Registrar Jess Ray will discuss some of the legal constraints you
should keep in mind as you deal with helicopter parents and your students’ right
to privacy.
- 11:50-Noon Transition
- Take a break and move in to the Brown Ballroom for lunch.
- Noon-12:30 Lunch
- You’ll be joined at your table by representative ISU students,
administrators, and members of the NFO Steering Committee. Here’s

- 12:30-1:00 Speaker: ISU History
- History Professor Emeritus John Freed will share findings of his
recent research into Illinois State University’s first century-and-a-half.
- 1:00-1:15 Transition

- So you’re supposed to be a successful teacher, a successful
researcher, and involved member of the University and local
community, and—oh yeah!—you’d like to “have
a life”! This session will provide some insights into
ways to balance all of these roles.

Situations
- ISU students are great, but they’re not always perfect!
Difficult classroom situations can—and will—arise.
This session will provide tips for coping as well as information
about University policies, procedures, and resources that can
help.

- Wait! Don’t leave! Come right back to the Old Main room for
the final plenary session of the day.
- 3:10-3:30 Plenary Session: New(er)
Faculty Initiative
- NFO is just one component of ISU’s New(er) Faculty Initiative.
Come learn about other support options for new faculty. We’ll
also have door prizes (must be present to win) and hand out maps to
the New Faculty Reception. We’ll finish up by 3:30 at the latest—we
promise!
- 4:00-6:00 New Faculty Reception
- Relax with new friends and colleagues at this reception hosted by
President Al Bowman and Provost Sheri Everts at the University Residence,
